Waratahs name side for APC opener
September 4, 2006

Nine players selected for the HSBC Waratahs opening Australian Provincial Championship match against the Brumbies have been cleared medically after taking part in Saturday's Tooheys New Cup Grand Final.

"Everyone got through medicals this morning after a pretty physical encounter so we're ploughing on with our first training session today," said HSBC Waratahs head coach Ewen McKenzie.

"The squad is game hardened but we've got some work to do tactically and that's what the next two days are about."

Former Waratah Sam Harris has been named on the bench alongside Morgan Turinui.

"Sam has trained extremely well since coming back from rugby league, in fact you wouldn't have guessed he ever left. As for Morgan, we thought it best to use him off the bench this week given the hand injury he's been carrying and we've got a squad of 30 to choose from."

Four players will make their NSW debut on Friday night, Beau Robinson (Norths), Nick Reily (Wests), Shawn Mackay (Randwick) and Tim Davidson (Sydney Uni).

"The debutants join a familiar Waratah combination which has performed well at this end of the season since 2004," McKenzie added.

"All of the squad members have expressed a real desperation to play in the APC because they'll get their chance to further press their selection claims."
