New recruits set for Western Force debut
September 7, 2006

New Emirates Western Force recruits Troy Takiari and Jon McGrath have been included in the 22 to play the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Saturday.

The two former Brumby Runners, recruited for next year's Super 14 squad, should debut for their new team at Ballymore, as will Australian U19s winger, Brett Stapleton.

Takiari plays both loose and tighthead prop and came to Perth from the Waratahs where he won two Super 14 caps, while McGrath, a scrumhalf, has played six of the last seven seasons with the Runners.

Stapleton and Emirates Western Force flanker David Pocock were members of the Australian U19s team which won the World Championship in Dubai in April. Both will start on Saturday.

Also in the 22 are two Perth club players James Stannard and Kiti Fuluna, highlighting the importance of a third tier national competition in the development of fringe players.

Stannard plays at flyhalf or fullback and had an outstanding season with Palmyra, while Fuluna, a flanker, was a member of the Wests Subiaco side which won the 2006 Home Building Society First Grade title last weekend.

Saturday's clash against the Reds will also see the return of Brendan Cannon, who has not played since neck surgery at the end of April.

A veteran of 40 Tests and 97 Super games, Cannon has been fast-tracked to the position of starting hooker after Luke Holmes broke his leg playing for Nedlands in last weekend's club grand final.

Also in the Emirates Western Force line-up for the first time are former Australian U21 players, Josh Fuimaono and AJ Whalley.

The squad is: 1. Gareth Hardy 2. Brendan Cannon 3. Angus Scott 4. Pat O'Connor 5. Luke Doherty (c) 6. Josh Fuimaono 7. Dave Pocock 8. Richard Brown 9. Matt Henjak 10. Scott Daruda 11.
