Kydd looking for Saints improvement

Northampton Saints centre Robbie Kydd is looking to turn spirit and commitment into points at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

In the Saints' last two Guinness Premiership matches against top-of-the-table opposition Saints have conceded only one try - James Simpson-Daniel's late effort for Gloucester last week.

Both games required Saints to spend a good proportion of the match without the ball. And now Kydd is looking to turn some of that defensive energy into points.

"There's been nothing wrong with the effort, especially in the last couple of weeks," he says. "It's the key skills we need to improve in our game to progress this week and go out and get the result.

"Bath are obviously a pretty good team at home. There are a lot of memories between Saints and Bath and they've got a great home fan base that'll be gee'd up for the big game."

Kydd has had the tag of 'utility back' since he first played in the Northampton shirt just over a year ago. But this season he has turned out predominantly in the centre and his play earned him a call-up to the Scottish Six Nations squad.

"I've had a good run in the starting line-up," he says. "I've been moving around from position to position and it obviously helps the more games you have in one position. I'm looking forward to another game in the centre."

Saints head coach Paul Grayson isn't underestimating the task ahead this weekend. Nevertheless he insists that his side needs to concentrate on themselves rather than anyone else in the league.

"The last two weeks were good performances with spirit and commitment," he says. "We've got to apply that when we've got the ball in hand a little bit. It's going to be difficult but we can't worry too much about what they're thinking.

"We should have won the game against Gloucester. It was a weather-affected game and we did enough to win. A late lapse and some good play by Gloucester made the game go away from us. We dominated the first half and they dominated the second. In terms of attack there wasn't much quality ball to do it."

Grayson also had praise for the three Saints Senior Academy members who will line up for England Under-20s at Franklin's Gardens tomorrow evening against France.

"The club have invested a lot of money into it and out players are starting to get international recognition. And at under-17 level we've got some exceptional talent. It's really exciting and good to see Northampton boys pull on the England shirt."
