The Way Forward hits the road

Rugby players, coaches, administrators and fans will have the chance to shape the future of rugby in England at two roadshows in Surrey and Hertfordshire next week.

The Way Forward project is the RFU's comprehensive review of all aspects of Elite Rugby that aims to return England to the top of the international game and to create a long-term structure for continued success of the club game.

The South East roadshows take place at Esher RFC on May 15 and Old Albanians RFC on May 16 (both starting at 7pm) and form part of a consultation process when the rugby public can put their views across.

You can also review the underlying issues and the options for change at a dedicated website http://www.rfuthewayforward.com/ and complete an online questionnaire.

RFU Chairman Martyn Thomas is encouraging as many people as possible to attend the roadshows.

"I recognise that there is frustration within the wider game at the continuing disagreements between the RFU and Premier Rugby Limited on issues affecting the elite game," he said.

"I can assure you that the RFU is keen to find an answer that restores England success both on and off the field and which helps to promote the sporting and commercial development of our leading clubs. It is, however, vital that any agreement is unambiguous and provides a long term solution. A 'quick-fix' would not be acceptable.

"If we are to find a lasting solution to the issues currently affecting English elite rugby, we need to take time to look at all aspects of the game, including whether the number of games played by our elite players and the structure of the overall playing environment are in the best interests of our players and the long-term prosperity of the game at both club and international levels.

"Against this background, I encourage you to participate in The Way Forward debate at the roadshows to be held around the country over the next month or by giving your views on line at http://www.rfuthewayforward.com/

"We believe that with the support and input of all those involved in English rugby, we will find a solution that not only allows us to catch up with developments in professional rugby elsewhere in the world, but also puts us back at the top of the world game."
