Dan Hyde of Otley RFC - the former Leeds and England A back-rower - was last night [Monday] suspended from participating in rugby union for 14 weeks.

Hyde was suspended, the Rugby Football union announced, for "an Anti-Doping Rule Violation after testing positive for the banned substance marijuana".

The RFU said the suspension followed a random drug test carried out after the match between Otley and Southend at Cross Green on Saturday 13 October 2007.

The suspension, by an RFU disciplinary panel meeting at the Leeds Brighouse Holiday Inn, runs from 5 November 2007 to 10 February 2008.

It includes playing, training with or being a member of a club, coaching, administering or acting in any official capacity within the sport.

Hyde - who played at blindside for an England XV against the Barbarians at Twickenham in May 2004 and went on to that year's Churchill Cup in Canada with England A - can resume these activities on 11 February 2008.

The disciplinary hearing panel comprised Mike Hamlin (Chairman), Antony Davies and Dr Barrie O'Driscoll.
