Dubai Sevens ready to go for 38th year

Friday sees the start of the Dubai Sevens which, though it is part of the IRB Sevens series, is in its 38th year of competition.

The 2007 event will be its 38th year.

Emirates Airline has been the official sponsor of the Dubai Rugby Sevens since 1988.

The first day consists of local and international invitational teams in action with days two and three seeing the 16 international sides compete for the Emirates International Trophy.

Over 1,750 players will take part.

More than 12,000 overseas visitors will attend.

The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is the first round of the International Rugby Board Sevens World Series.

South Africa are the reigning Dubai Rugby Sevens champions. They beat New Zealand 31-12 in the final last year.

The temporary stadium constructed at the Exiles Ground can hold over 32,000 people. Work starts on the stadium three months before the Tournament.

The television airtime in 2006 increased by 18% from the 2005 event to a total of 183 hours of coverage with 151 of those broadcast live from the event.

The three-day event is brought to a close with 'Rugby Rock' featuring a international act yet to be announced.

It is a sell-out with no tickets now available.
