Freshwater given four week ban
December 19, 2007

England prop Perry Freshwater has been suspended for four weeks after pleading guilty to striking London Irish lock Kieron Roche.

Freshwater was cited after he lashed out during Perpignan's Heineken Cup victory on Saturday and left Roche with a fractured eye-socket.

An independent disciplinary committee ruled the incident to be a "mid-range'' offence and handed down a four-week suspension, which starts today.

Freshwater will miss one Heineken Cup match for Perpignan, against the already-eliminated Treviso, and two French championship games.

Freshwater will be available to play again on January 16, three days before Perpignan's final Heineken Cup Pool One clash with Newport Gwent Dragons.

Irish demanded action against Perpignan skipper after Roche was taken to hospital with facial injuries.

Freshwater escaped immediate punishment as the Italian match officials claimed they did not see the incident but the after reviewing video evidence the citing commissioner John West saw reason to call the player to account.

At the end of the heated contest refereee Carlo Damasco had to be escorted from the field by security.
