Carter welcomes first chance at inside centre
January 21, 2008

Powerful Sydney University runner Tom Carter has welcomed a first-up start at inside centre for the Waratahs in Saturday's trial against the Queensland Reds at Campbelltown.

Carter was hampered by injury for most of 2007 robbing him of an almost certain Super 14 debut.

"Tom toured South Africa and pushed really hard for a start and he was close to getting that before injury unfortunately struck soon after," said Waratahs' head coach Ewen McKenzie.

"This is a big opportunity for Tom and several of our younger players to burst out of the blocks against a pretty strong Queensland side."

Carter will play alongside last year's best back Ben Jacobs.

"I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in with Ben and making the most of the opportunity," said Carter.

"We were room-mates in South Africa last year and he just appears to be improving each season."

Josh Valentine and Daniel Halangahu will start in the halves while Timana Tahu is one of 13 reserves named for the match.

Tickets for the Australia Day event start at just $12 for adults with children 17 and under getting in free.
