England Saxons flanker Ben Woods has signed a new one-year deal with Newcastle Falcons.

The 26-year-old openside will stay at Kingston Park until at least the summer of 2009, having come through the Falcons academy system.

Newcastle director of rugby, John Fletcher, said: "Ben is an outstanding talent, an integral part of our future plans here and we're delighted to have agreed this new deal.

"He has already proved himself to be a very effective force at Guinness Premiership and England Saxons level, and is working hard on every area of his game to push on for higher honours.

"Ben very much typifies what we stand for here at Newcastle Falcons, a young English player with a fantastic attitude and a desire to continually improve, so it is great news for the club that he has agreed to stay."

The former Durham University student and Cambridge Blue spent two seasons out of the game with a badly broken leg before making his comeback in 2005, going on to make 69 first team appearances and scoring seven tries.

Speaking after signing his new deal, the Barnsley-born back rower said: "With hard work the Falcons pack has been continually improving over the past year or so, and this is a club that I want to be part of.

"The ambition around the place under John Fletcher and the quality of players we have in the squad right now is outstanding, so I'm looking forward to the challenge of helping the club get to where it should rightfully be."
