QR Reds flanker David Croft is looking forward to one last battle with long-time sparring partner Phil Waugh when the Reds meet the Waratahs in Saturday's Investec Super 14 match at Suncorp Stadium.

Croft and Waugh have been opponents - and occasionally team-mates - since under age representative team days and this will be the last time the two warriors will go head to head before Croft retires from professional rugby at the end of the season.

Their personal battles in interstate matches like Saturday's have always been highlights and Saturday's will be no exception, with no quarter asked or given. One year when they clashed the referee intervened to break them up, only to be reassured that "we were just having fun, sir".

Croft said he always enjoys the physical contest with Waugh and is looking forward to locking horns one last time.

"I love playing against guys like Phil, he's such a competitor, and he's one of the best flankers in the world, hands down," Croft said.

"He's the same age as me, I've played under age football against him, with him, and it's a massive challenge.

"I enjoy the physical battle out there and I think he does as well."
