Bath bid to make it third time lucky

Bath Rugby have their last shot at silverware under departing captain Steve Borthwick when they go into their European Challenge Cup final high noon Sunday showdown with Worcester Warriors at Kingsholm, Gloucester.

The 21-10 Premiership semi-final defeat by London Wasps yesterday (Sunday, 18 May) ended Bath's hopes of domestic honours but a prestigious European title is at stake in the all-England final before Borthwick leaves a club he has represented close on 250 times.

Bath have fallen at the final European Challenge Cup hurdle twice in the last five seasons - to London Wasps in 2003 and ASM Clermont Auvergne 12 months ago - and following the weekend defeat by London Wasps, Bath Director of Rugby Steve Meehan said, "We are disappointed because we didn't play to our best.

"We had opportunities but the passes weren't up to scratch. At times we were our own worst enemies.

"We have another chance for a trophy against Worcester in the European Challenge Cup final and the players deserve to win something for the way they have played this season."

England back row forward Michael Lipman was forced off in the first half with a facial injury but will be fit to face Worcester Warriors.

"Michael made a tackle and split his lip," said Meehan. "He's had about 10 stitches and had difficulty breathing so we couldn't get him back on the pitch but he'll be OK for next Sunday and the European Challenge Cup final."
