Preview: Scotland ease to victory against Romania
September 18, 2007

Scotland head coach Frank Hadden has made four changes to his team for the World Cup Pool C clash against Romania at Murrayfield.

Prop Gavin Kerr and hooker Ross Ford will come into the front row in place of Allan Jacobsen and Scott Lawson respectively on Tuesday, while James Hamilton replaces Scott Murray at lock.

In the backs, Chris Paterson comes in the wing - with wide man Simon Webster moving into the centres as a replacement for the rested Marcus Di Rollo.

Dan Parks keeps his place at fly-half but is expected to hand over kicking duties to Paterson.

Jacobsen was ruled out of the tournament last week, after tearing his calf muscle during Scotland's 56-10 defeat of Portugal.

"As usual the selection is about winning the game,'' said Hadden on the BBC website, http://www.bbc.co.uk/.

"We have also taken into account the nature of the powerful forward display with which Romania played against Italy at Marseille last week, and have picked a heavyweight pack of our own.''

Romania lost to the Italians on Wednesday.

Romania head coach Daniel Santamans has named an unchanged team for Tuesday's World Cup Pool C match against Scotland at Murrayfield.

Santamans saw his side lose gallantly to Italy on Wednesday in their tournament opener, although they did grab a bonus point from the 24-18 defeat.

The Romanians lost 48-6 to the Scots the last time they played at Murrayfield in November 2006.

+ Scotland have won nine times and lost twice in their 11 past meetings with Romania.

+ Romania first beat Scotland in 1984, posting a 28-22 win over the Grand Slam-winning team. They achieved their second home win over the Scots in 1991, prevailing 18-12. Both matches were played in Bucharest.

+ Scotland captain Jason White has painful memories of their last meeting. During the 48-6 win at Murrayfield on November 11 last year, White sustained a cruciate knee ligament injury which kept him out of match action until last month.

+ Scotland's biggest win over the Romanians was their 60-19 victory in Glasgow in 1999.

+ Romania have played at every World Cup. Invited to the 1987 World Cup, they have successfully come through qualifying to take their place at each of the subsequent tournaments.

+ Scotland and Romania clashed at the 1987 World Cup, with the Scots emerging 55-28 winners in Dunedin. John Jeffrey scored a hat-trick of tries and Gavin Hastings finished with a match haul of two tries, eight conversions and a penalty.

+ The first rugby balls were brought to Romania by students from the country returning from France at the start of the last century.

+ Romania took the bronze medal at rugby in the 1924 Olympics, staged in Paris. However they did so by default, as only three teams entered the competition and Romania lost to 59-3 to France and 39-0 to eventual gold medallists United States.
