New Zealand Cup side Northland have named former All Black Blair Larsen as assistant coach to recently appointed Head Coach Bryce Woodward.

Larsen, at home at flanker or lock during his playing career, played 17 Tests and 40 games for New Zealand between 1992 and 1996 and has joined Northland on a two season deal. Larsen was one of three applicants interviewed by Woodward, who took up his role with the club in mid-November following the departure of Mark Anscombe to Auckland. Woodward and Larsen will be looking to revive the side after they limped to a disappointing tenth in the table last season.

Woodward said, "We are delighted to have a coach of Blair's ability and standing in the game," Woodward said. "His technical skills, coaching background and his clarity around the requirements to be successful at the Air NZ Cup level were a standout."
