Former Scarlets and Leeds coach Phil Davies has been appointed as a consultant to Welsh Premiership side Cardiff RFC until the end of the season.

Davies returned to rugby as coach of the Wales U20 side in September, a position he will continue in, after leaving the Scarlets in controversial circumstances in April 2008.

"I am very pleased to accept the invitation and to be involved, hands-on, with the Cardiff team," said former Wales captain Davies. "I see myself giving support wherever I can, whether it is with the players or the coaches.

"As well as preparing the team every week it will also be an opportunity to look at the structure in the team and backroom staff and to plan their further development.

"I also want to continue the good practices already in place, especially the two-way relationship between the club team and the regional Blues squad, where I have a very high regard for the work being done by David Young."

Davies will take charge of his first Cardiff training session on Thursday ahead of Saturday's Premiership meeting with Cross Keys.

"He will act as a consultant to the coaches and players in our squad, taking regular training sessions and, whenever his contractual commitment with Sky Sports allows, he will be in charge of the team on match days," Cardiff's chairman Malcolm Childs said. "He brings with him invaluable experience and we are sure to benefit from his input."
