Defending champions Samoa, current HSBC Sevens Series leaders New Zealand, England and Fiji all emerged with 100% records on the opening day of action at the Adelaide Sevens.

They are joined in the Cup quarter-finals by Argentina, hosts Australia, USA Sevens winners South Africa and reigning Rugby World Cup Sevens champions Wales.

New Zealand booked a quarter-final with Argentina by topping Pool A with a 34-14 victory against Kenya. The Hong Kong Sevens champions began their campaign with a 36-10 victory against Wales before beating the Cook Islands 40-7 thanks largely to a Toby Arnold hat-trick. Wales joined them in the last eight after seeing off the Cook Islands 53-0 and Kenya 26-14 with their reward a date with England.

England narrowly beat Argentina 21-19 to reach the Cup quarter finals as Pool B winners. They got off to a strong start with a 45-7 victory over Scotland before adding a second win with a 45-12 success against Papua New Guinea. Nick Royle was the star of the show for Ben Ryan's side with two tries in their opener and hat-tricks in their other two clashes. They are joined in the quarter-finals by Argentina who beat Scotland 22-7 and earlier proved too strong for Papua New Guinea - winning out 45-5.

Fiji will face South Africa in the quarter-finals after beating the hosts 26-21 in the final match on day one. Jacob Taylor and Greg Jeloudev had given Australia a 14-0 lead but Emosi Vucago's try before half-time and three Fijian tries after the break proved too much for the hosts. They had earlier accounted for the United States with a 41-5 victory before seeing off Tonga 33-14. Australia gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about with a 40-14 victory over Tonga and a 28-10 win against the United States that proved enough for them to progress.

Defending Adelaide and World Series champions Samoa ended day one unbeaten following their 26-17 victory against South Africa in the final Pool D match. That success followed a 40-7 win against Japan and a narrow 19-12 victory over France. South Africa joined them in the last eight thanks to a 21-12 victory against Japan and a 19-0 win in their clash with France with Series points leader Cecil Afika adding three tries to his season tally.
