New Zealand and Fiji remain on course for title

Title rivals New Zealand and Fiji both went unbeaten on the opening day of action at the penultimate HSBC Sevens World Series event in Glasgow.

Series leaders New Zealand sealed their passage to the Cup quarter-finals with a narrow 22-21 victory over Pool B Samoa having already accounted for Spain (31-5) and France (66-0). Samoa's success in dispatching Spain (24-17) and France (22-14) ensured they will also grace the knock-out stages of the Cup competition.

Fiji kept up the pressure the Kiwis by storming to a comprehensive 47-7 victory over Argentina in the Pool C decider. Earlier in the day, the Fijians had swept Namibia aside 40-0 and also beaten Portugal 28-5. Argentina's disappointment was eased with the news that they would join Fiji in the quarter-finals thanks to wins against Zimbabwe (19-14) and Portugal (17-5).

England claimed top spot in Pool A with a vital 19-14 victory over Australia that followed a hard-fought 19-12 win against the USA and a more convincing 40-7 victory over Kenya. Victories over Kenya (28-26) and the USA (29-14) ensured Australia would go through in second place.

They will be joined in the last eight by Wales who won Pool D thanks to a first-ever victory (17-5) over South Africa. The Welsh side's unbeaten run on day one also included a 31-5 victory over Russia and narrow 17-14 success against Scotland. South Africa progressed as runners up but they were also given scares by both Russia (17-14) and hosts Scotland (19-14).
