Ben Ryan's England were the major casualties on day one of the Gold Coast leg of the IRB Sevens World Series. After losing out to Samoa 19-17 due to Lolo Lio's try, England finished third in Pool C on points difference. Kenya wrapped up second spot and a place in the Cup quarter-finals after victory over Spain and a 14-14 draw with England, thanks in part to Dennis Ombachi's try. Samoa will face Fiji in the last eight, after their Islander rivals finished second to Australia in Pool B. The hosts produced some late magic to see off their rivals 15-14 thanks to Jordan Tuapou's try. Perhaps the biggest result of the day came in the penultimate match, where South Africa defeated reigning series champions New Zealand 31-21 to top Pool A. Cornal Hendricks bagged the day's first hat-trick against Canada and crossed again against Gordon Tietjens' men to set up a quarter-final clash against France, who finished second in Pool D. In a tightly-contested group, Argentina prevailed to secure the dubious honour of facing a wounded New Zealand in the next round, having seen off Wales 17-5 in the deciding match. Nicolas Bruzzone crossed twice for the Pumas to seal their passage, with the reigning Rugby World Cup Sevens champions finishing in third on points difference. Gold Coast Sevens - Cup quarter-finals
