South Africa stunned HSBC Sevens World Series leaders New Zealand as they produced a thrilling display to claim the USA Sevens title in Las Vegas.

The Boks, who beat Samoa in the semis, ran in six tries to race into a 40-7 lead with playmaker Branco du Preez in sparkling form. The Kiwis, having overcome Fiji in sudden death in the semis, rallied late on but the Boks went on to secure a 40-21 victory and their first title since 2011.

The South Africans became the fifth nation to win a title in five events in this year's series, which has just four rounds to go. They have moved into second place in the overall standings, 23 points behind leaders New Zealand (96), while Samoa (71) and Fiji (66) make up the rest of the top four.

England, who took the Wellington leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series last week, had failed to win a single game in the pool stages losing to Fiji, Scotland and Portugal. In the other trophies, Canada beat hosts USA and then Scotland to claim the Plate, France edged Argentina to the Bowl and Australia were too strong for Uruguay in the Shield.
