New Zealand crowned world champions

New Zealand put an exclamation mark on their IRB Women's Sevens World Series title win by winning the Netherlands tournament in Amsterdam. The New Zealand Women's Sevens team secured their hold on the four-part Series by defeating Spain 14- 5 in the quarter-finals, and the "Sevens Sisters" then beat Russia 24 -10 in the semi-finals before beating Canada 33-24 in the final.

Canada scored first and led for most of the final before the series' highest try-scorer, Portia Woodman, scored her 21st five-pointer to nudge the New Zealanders out to their first lead of the game, just three minutes from full time.

Coach Sean Horan said: "I am incredibly proud of the girls. This was a tough tournament with testing conditions for us, but they kept the pressure up and came away with the results. There's a lot to be said for the strong culture within the team and that's been a key feature of this team."

The four-round world series was set up this year after the inclusion of women's Sevens' in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games program. New Zealand won the first event in Dubai and the third in the Chinese city of Guangzhou before heading to the Netherlands.
