RWC 2003 kicks off with Luxembourg win
Stavanger
September 24, 2000

Luxembourg kicked off the 2003 Rugby World Cup with a European qualifying round win over Norway in Stavanger.

In dry windy conditions Luxembourg ran in five tries, with fly-half Gilles Cavigilia converting all of them and adding two penalty goals.

Full-back Jonathan Harris had the honour of scoring the first try of the qualifying campaign, under the posts in the opening minutes.

A strong back-line coupled with sharp tackling guaranteed Luxembourg, who led 24-3 at half-time, were always on top, with Norway struggling to hold on to possession.

The good news for Norway was the presence of 12 first generation Norwegians in their side. They take on Sweden in their next match on 28 October, while Luxembourg play Latvia a week earlier.

Norway - pens: Roger Yttervik 2, Angus Reid

Luxembourg - tries: Jonathan Harris 2, Simon Williams 2, Arnaud Tribellini; cons: Gilles Cavigilia 5; pens: Cavigilia 2
