New dates for Wellington Sevens

In an attempt to breathe life into the ailing tournament the Wellington Sevens will move dates next year. After two years of declining ticket sales and under pressure to retain its spot on the world series, it is teaming up with the horse racing fraternity to for two weeks of events in January.

The sevens will move to the last weekend in January, shifting from its traditional Friday and Saturday on the first week of February. It is being revamped along with changes to the racing calendar including the Wellington Cup moving to the Saturday of Wellington Anniversary weekend - the weekend before the sevens.

Organisers hope joining forces will mean sports fans could enjoy a day at the race and the sevens. Last year only 18,000 tickets were sold for the two-day sevens event at Westpac Stadium which came under fire for the unruly behaviour of intoxicated fans in recent years.
