New Zealand continued their powerful form in the IRB Sevens World Series to finish day one of the Las Vegas Sevens unbeaten, with Gordon Tietjens' men matched by England, Samoa and Wellington champions Fiji at the Sam Boyd Stadium.

New Zealand hammered France and Guyana and scraped past Australia to end day one unbeaten, with skipper DJ Forbes to the fore with a brace against the French and another in a mixed performance against an improving Australian side.

The series leaders will face a tough test in the quarter-finals against reigning series champions South Africa, who finished behind Fiji in Pool B.

Paul Treu's side have not been at their best thus far this season and ran Fiji close before succumbing 12-5. Fiji had earlier been given a scare by the USA, who included NFL converts Bennie Brazell and Leonard Peters in their squad, winning 14-12. The Fijians face Australia in the last eight.

England began with a victory over rivals Wales before securing a hard-fought win over Japan. Ben Ryan's side finished with a draw against Argentina, but with the other sides taking points off each other their passage as Pool winners was secured.

Wales powered past Japan and the Pumas to book a quarter-final against Samoa, while England face familiar foes in Kenya.

Samoa's Mikaele Pesamino scored eight tries on day one as they finished unbeaten, thrashing Chile before showing continued good form with victory over Scotland and Kenya. The Kenyans were well supported at the ground and pulled out the required victories to book another last eight spot as they continue to improve.
