South African 7s captain Neil Powell has been ruled out of the first two events on this season's IRB Sevens calendar with an arm injury.

Powell will undergo an operation on his injured forearm later today and will be out of action for up to ten weeks, SA Rugby has confirmed.

The scrum-half suffered a recurrence of the radius fracture to his right forearm during a training match last week, the same arm he injured two months ago in the Absa Currie Cup competition.

The injury has ruled him out of the first two tournaments of the IRB World Sevens Series, in Dubai (November 28-29) and George (December 5-6), and the team is hopeful that he will return to full fitness in time for the New Zealand tournament in February next year.

Unfortunately for the team, two more players - Shaun Venter and Chase Minnaar - suffered injuries during the same training exercise and both will be further examined later today to determine their readiness for possible inclusion in the Bok Sevens squad to Dubai and George. Both players sustained knee injuries.

SA Rugby will announce the finalised Springbok Sevens squad for the first two Series tournaments on Tuesday.
