Leicester Tigers wing Tom Varndell has been called in to the England Sevens squad for the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament in Dubai. Varndell has not played for England Sevens since the Commonwealth Games in 2006 but has happy memories of Dubai, winning "Player of the Tournament" on debut there in 2005.

Varndell joins an experienced England line-up that also includes Newcastle Falcons' Ollie Phillips and IRB Sevens Series record scorer Ben Gollings, the only member of the squad to also take part in the 2005 World Cup.

Coach Ben Ryan has retained 10 of the squad that won the Wellington Sevens last month, with Varndell and Exeter's Josh Drauniniu the only changes.

"I am immensely proud of the squad's successes so far this season. This is one of England Sevens' most successful periods, reaching four of the last five finals going into a World Cup is unbelievably exciting," said Ryan. "We have a terrific blend of hard work and ability in a very humble squad and I can't think of a group of people that I would rather go into such a momentous tournament with."
