Catt, an athletic loose-head, was tipped for the top at an early stage and quickly rose through the Bath ranks after being recruited by their academy. In 2007 he starred for England at the Under-19 World Cup and went on to start every game during the age-grade Six Nations a year later. The prop then featured for the England Under-20 team that reached the 2008 IRB Junior World Championship final. He made his debut for Bath in the EDF Energy Cup match against Leicester in 2008 and a year later he made his first league appearance against Worcester. In January 2009 Catt made his England Saxons debut against Portugal.
