Welsh flanker Dan Lydiate topped off his impressive season with the Welsh Rugby Writers' Player of the Year Award at a ceremony last night.

Lydiate took the Player of the Six Nations award after he helped steer Wales to the Grand Slam and has now been recognised by journalists for his work in the back-row. The Ospreys' Ashley Beck was the other big winner on the night as he scooped the most promising player gong.

In related news, reports suggest that Lydiate will not have to have an operation on his ankle as first feared. The blindside is suffering from a persistent ankle problem and has had to have it strapped in the past. But the BBC claims that even if he has to have some minor work done, he will still be fit in time for pre-season training with the Newport Gwent Dragons.

Lydiate's Wales team-mate Jonathan Davies was not so lucky however and will need an operation on a groin problem.
