Ulster winger Andrew Trimble is the surprise omission from Ireland's 33-man training squad for their Six Nations opener against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

Trimble, capped 49 times, was a key figure for Ireland throughout last year before being dropped for his side's final end of year international against Argentina in favour of provincial team-mate Craig Gilroy. The 28-year-old was handed a chance to force his way back into the reckoning in the Ireland Wolfhounds' clash with England Saxons on Friday night but clearly did not do enough to impress coach Declan Kidney.

Eleven players who featured in the Wolfhounds' 14-10 defeat to the Saxons are in the selection mix including Connacht centre Dave McSharry and Ulster fly-half Paddy Jackson who both suffered minor knocks in that game. Props Michael Bent, David Kilcoyne, Declan Fitzpatrick and Tom Court are all included in the squad along with Luke Fitzgerald, Iain Henderson, Kevin McLaughlin, Mike Sherry and Devin Toner.

Kidney will name his match-day squad for the Millennium Stadium showdown on Tuesday afternoon.

Ireland Training squad:
Michael Bent, Rory Best, Tom Court, Sean Cronin, Gordon D'Arcy, Keith Earls, Luke Fitzgerald, Declan Fitzpatrick, Craig Gilroy, Cian Healy, Jamie Heaslip, Iain Henderson, Chris Henry, Paddy Jackson, Rob Kearney, David Kilcoyne, Conor Murray, Mike McCarthy, Kevin McLaughlin, Fergus McFadden, Dave McSharry, Sean O'Brien, Donncha O'Callaghan, Brian O'Driscoll, Ronan O'Gara, Peter O'Mahony, Eoin Reddan, Mike Ross, Donnacha Ryan, Jonathan Sexton, Mike Sherry, Devin Toner, Simon Zebo
