Scotland are facing an anxious wait over the fitness of blindside Alasdair Strokosch after he left the field early in Saturday's Calcutta Cup clash with England at Twickenham.

Strokosch was forced off in the 13th minute of the match with an eye injury. Reports in the Scottish press claim that he is likely to miss the rest of the Six Nations and team doctor James Robson has said that the Perpignan No.6 will see a surgeon on Tuesday who will confirm the prognosis.

"It would seem he has a fractured orbit (area around the eye) but, as ever with such collision-type injuries, they can take time to settle," Robson said. "He will be examined by Mr Martin Paley, a maxillary facial specialist at Spire Murrayfield Hospital on Tuesday, to determine the extent of the injury and any recovery schedule."

Scotland are also sweating on the fitness of Dougie Hall (knee), David Denton (knee) and Johnnie Beattie (ankle) ahead of their match with Italy. And with this in mind Saturday's 23-man squad will train alongside another 13 players prior to Saturday's match.

Hooker Pat MacArthur, back-rower Robert Harley and full-back Peter Murchie together with Edinburgh lock Grant Gilchrist all travelled to Twickenham with the first XV while Peter Horne returns to the frame after recovering from a thumb injury.

Scotland have also called up props Jon Welsh (Glasgow Warriors) Alasdair Dickinson (Sale Sharks), hooker Steve Lawrie (Edinburgh Rugby), back-rower Richie Vernon (Sale Sharks), scrum-half Sean Kennedy (Glasgow Warriors), fly-half Tom Heathcote (Bath Rugby) and wings Nikki Walker (Worcester Warriors) and Duncan Taylor (Saracens).
