Matthew Rees' management company have confirmed the Wales hooker is undergoing treatment for testicular cancer.

Cardiff Blues said on Friday the hooker will spend time away from the game as he receives treatment and his management company ABC have issued a statement regarding the hooker's health, saying: "Matt Rees is currently battling against testicular cancer.

"We would be grateful for any support that you could give to Matt during this difficult time and are aiming to reach out to everyone who has played with or against, supported or knows Matt."

The hooker underwent surgery at the end of October and the Blues are hopeful Rees will be back on the field sooner rather than later.

The Blues added: "Matthew has asked the region to pass on his sincere gratitude for the many messages he has received from well-wishers over the last two weeks and to thank the media for respecting his privacy at this time.

"The region will continue to support Matthew and his family in every way possible throughout this period and we look forward to his return to rugby in the future."

Blues coach Phil Davies told Wales Online: "We have got to respect his privacy. We are all behind him and we are pretty sure that things will work out for the best. We have to give him a bit of space now to go through this with his family.

"We don't have much of a timeline. We are hoping it will be sooner rather than later. It is a case of leaving the experts to take care of him. We will see him as soon as he's ready to come back."
