Joel Tomkins returns to rugby league

Former England centre Joel Tomkins has returned to rugby league after signing a deal with Wigan Warriors which will keep him there until 2018.

Wigan have paid an undisclosed fee for Tomkins' services in a move that brings to an end his association with union. He played a key role for Saracens over the past two seasons and started all three of England's autumn internationals but he has opted to return to league.

"This was a no-brainer," Tomkins told the Wigan Evening Post. "I enjoyed my time in union, but it didn't feel the same as playing league. I did something new and I'm glad I tried it, but I feel like I belong in rugby league. It's where I want to finish my career."

Tomkins is currently out injured but hopes to return to training in four weeks time. For Saracens, they will now look to Marcelo Bosch and Nick Tompkins in the centres and their coach Mark McCall paid tribute to Tomkins.

"Joel's spell in rugby union can only be described as a great success," McCall said. "He worked hard to understand a new code, produced many fine performances for Saracens and was duly rewarded by selection to play for England in the autumn internationals last season. His achievement within two years has been remarkable.

"We are extremely disappointed to see him leave but Joel has simply reached a decision that he is an even better rugby league player. We wish him and Nicola well in the future."
