Ireland look set to be without Jonathan Sexton for their Six Nations match against Italy on March 6.

Sexton picked up a thumb injury against England at the weekend and his Racing Metro coach Laurent Labit has confirmed the fly-half is going to be forced to spend a period of time on the sidelines.

He told a press conference on Thursday: "Sexton has damaged ligaments in the thumb and will be unavailable for between 10 days and six weeks."

Ireland will hope it is on the lesser scale but if Sexton is ruled out of their match against Italy in nine days, Paddy Jackson is expected to step in at fly-half.
