Sharks and Wolves consider joint future

A decision expected on Wednesday on an application by Tetley's Bitter Super League side Warrington Wolves for a new stadium is being awaited with interest by Sale Sharks.

Sales' owner, Brian Kennedy has admitted that a ground share with the rugby league side is one of the options being considered as the club look to establish themselves in the north and meet the stadium requirements of at least 10,000 capacity to be phased in over the next two years.

The arrangement would be similar to the one the two Leeds rugby clubs, the Leeds Tykes, of National One and Leeds Rhinos of the Tetley's Bitter Super League have in which both clubs are managed by a single company.

Peter Deakin, Warrington's chief executive, told the Sunday Times: "The idea is for one super rugby club, with separate teams playing throughout the year in the two codes."

Should a move to the new stadium, which is 10 miles away from Sale's tight Heywood Road ground and would be partly funded by Tesco who want to build a supermarket next door, happens it is though the Sale Sharks could be renamed the Northern Sharks.

Kennedy said that the share with Warrington was one option being considered along with the possibility that Sale could build there own ground.

On Saturday Sale confounded the doubters by beating Bath, joint favourites for the title in their opening game of the Zurich Premiership.
