New Zealand born, London Wasps backrow Dan Ward-Smith has built a big reputation in his five years of Premiership rugby and has represented England to Saxons level.
Ward-Smith joined the London club from Bristol at the beginning of the 2009/10 season. The No8 made his name for the West Country club, who he joined from Plymouth and starred in his first season. His performances earned him his first Saxons cap against Ireland 'A' in 2006 and was selected for the preliminary World Cup squad a year later only for a knee injury to curtail his ambition.
Despite missing the last few months of the season, Ward-Smith was nominated for Premiership Player of the Year. He suffered another injury setback a year later when he broke his wrist against Harlequins. He recovered to make 16 appearances for the team.
He has impressed since moving to Wasps and was selected for England's end of season tour of the southern hemisphere. After an impressive 2010-11 season, Ward-Smith looked to be back to his best form. However, he sustained a back injury in April 2011 which brought an end to his season. And Ward-Smith failed to recover from the injury and reluctantly announced his retirement from the game in August 2011.
