France will head into the Six Nations without talismanic forward Sebastien Chabal due to injury.

He will miss their opening game against Scotland at Murrayfield on February 6 and joins Toulouse lock Romain Millo-Chluski on the sidelines.

Chabal turned out for Racing Metro at No.8 in their surprise Top 14 victory over Clermont Auvergne on January 27 and has not trained since joining the France squad at their base in Marcoussis.

The management did not reveal the nature of Chabal's injury, but the setback will be galling to coach Marc Lievremont, who has been open in his criticism of the league fixture list. Scrum-half Morgan Parra, hooker Dimitri Szarzewski and No.8 Imanol Harinoroquy have all been rested from training. Chabal's injury opens the door to Yoann Maestri, the uncapped Toulouse lock.

There was also troubling news for Scotland as abrasive Gloucester flanker Alasdair Strokosch was ruled out of the game with an ankle injury. He will remain with his club as he continues his recovery. Fullback Rory Lamont will also miss the game to continue work on his ankle problem, having come through a club game for Toulon last weekend.
