Italy coach Nick Mallett has been forced to make two changes to his 24-man squad ahead of the Six Nations match against England in Rome on Sunday.

Valerio Bernabo and Pablo Canavosio return to the national team in place of Carlo Antonio Del Fava and Simon Picone who were both unavailable for selection after they sustained injuries during training this week.

Del Fava suffered a right knee injury and is set to undergo an operation that will sideline him for at least a month. Mallett will wait until Friday to name his starting XV.

"Carlo Del Fava reported a meniscus break in his right knee in training last night," the Italian rugby federation said in a statement on Wednesday. "His recovery time is estimated at four weeks."

Italy lost their opening match to reigning Six Nations champions Ireland 29-11 at Croke Park last weekend.
