Rob Kearney has been ruled out of Ireland's Six Nations showdown with England at Twickenham on February 27 with a knee injury.

The British & Irish Lions fullback was forced from the field in Ireland's disappointing defeat to France in Paris last weekend and a scan revealed a medial ligament strain that will require three to five weeks of recovery time, placing him in serious doubt for remaining games against Wales and Scotland.

Both Brian O'Driscoll and John Hayes trained with the squad on Thursday after recovering from minor problems, although Leo Cullen and Stephen Ferris sat out the session. The forwards are expected to be fit for the trip to Twickenham.

With Jerry Flannery's six-week ban for kicking Alexis Palisson hanging over the squad, Connacht hooker Sean Cronin has been called in as backup to Rory Best, who will start for Ulster as they take on the Dragons in a Magners League game at Ravenhill on Friday.
