Australia and Waratahs lock Dan Vickerman could be forced to retire as he struggles to overcome a stress fracture in a leg.

The 32-year-old, who has won 63 caps for the Wallabies, is set to miss the entire Super Rugby season with the injury and will make a decision on his long-term future in the coming days, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Vickerman underwent shoulder reconstruction surgery after last year's Rugby World Cup and a few days ago the Waratahs suggested that injury would keep him out until April. However Waratahs official later confirmed Vickerman was receiving "ongoing treatment" to his leg.

Former Brumbies skipper Stephen Hoiles was spotted at Waratahs training this weeek and the back-rower could yet replace Vickerman should the Waratahs player decide to retire.

The Waratahs will also start the season without Wallabies winger Lachie Turner, who is expected to miss the entire campaign with a hamstring tear, while Drew Mitchell is unlikely to be firt for their opening Super Rugby match with the Reds.
