Mils Muliaina's Irish rugby club became aware South Wales police wanted to speak to the ex-All Black just before he took to the field in Gloucester last weekend. Muliaina, 34, was taken away by officers after the game to be interviewed in relation to an alleged sexual assault in Cardiff on March 6. He hasn't been charged and denies any wrong-doing.

Connacht Rugby says it has completed an internal review of the circumstances surrounding the questioning of Muliaina, media report. The club says it only became aware police wanted to speak with Muliaina immediately prior to kick-off in Gloucester at which point details of the nature of their inquiry were not made available.

Muliaina suffered a groin injury during his team's loss to Gloucester. He will continue with his rehabilitation and follow "the usual return-to-play protocols over the coming weeks", the club says. Subject to fitness he will be available for selection by coach Pat Lam.

Muliaina's manager Simon Porter said that Muliaina denied any wrongdoing and was shocked about the allegations. Porter told Newstalk ZB Muliaina believed he was being escorted for drug testing following the match when the police approached.

"He denies all allegations of wrongdoing we're sure that in time as all of it is processed we will clear his name," Porter said soon after the arrest. "When he got approached as he was walking off the pitch he thought he was getting drug tested - he just had no idea what was coming and was just shocked."

Muliaina earned 100 caps in a nine-year Test career before retiring in 2011. He signed a one-year deal with Connacht last year and will leave for Italian side Zebre at the end of this season.
