Elvis Vermeulen has been ruled out of France's World Cup squad after discovering that he requires back surgery.

The No.8 was forced to withdraw from the squad after a scan revealed a slipped disc inhis back that requires immediate treatment.

The Clermont Auvergne star discovered the injury a coupole of days after his side were pipped to the French Top 14 title by Stade Francais at the Stade de France.

"Further tests revealed that surgery could not be avoided," said the club in a statement on Saturday.

The 28-year-old, who has eight caps, was named on Thursday as the first choice number eight in France's 30-man squad.

"It's difficult to take," a disappointed Vermeulen commented after receiving the news.
