Ali Carter booked his passage to a second World Championship final with a 17-12 win over Stephen Maguire.

Carter came into the final session with a four-frame lead at 14-10 and he snuffed out any prospect of a fightback from his opponent to secure his place in the Crucible final for the second time - having been beaten by Ronnie O'Sullivan in 2008.

The opening frame of the session saw Carter take it with a couple of contributions and it put him on the front foot.

Maguire's hopes of mounting any sort of fightback were effectively snuffed out in the next as Carter took the frame courtesy of an outrageous fluke. So bad was Carter's attempted pot, the red he aimed at cannoned into another which put it back on target and into the pocket.

All Maguire could do was offer a wry smile as Carter moved within one frame of victory. The Englishman failed to get over the line in the next frame, showing signs of nerves when missing a simple red, as Maguire stepped in to take the frame.

Maguire grabbed the frame before the interval, but his charge was halted upon the resumption as Carter rolled in a brilliant 70 to clinch victory.
