Steve Davis made a fine start to the Shanghai Masters with a 5-1 win over Zhu Yinghui.

The veteran is not the force of old and is now down at 49 in the world, but he is still capable of quality play at times. In 16-year-old Zhu, he was up against a player 39 years his junior and he taught his younger opponent a lesson in efficiency.

Zhu fashioned a host of chances, but failed to take them and Davis was on hand to mop up the offerings.

Davis had the match in his grasp at 4-0, but missed a brown with the rest and Zhu mopped up the colours to avoid the whitewash.

The six-time World Champion shrugged off the failure to close out the match by laying on a brilliant snooker which drew the mistake and Davis knocked in a 39 which set him on the path to victory and a meeting with Ricky Walden in the last 32.

Lu Haotian held his nerve in superb fashion to knock in a stunning 76 in the final frame to beat Marco Fu 5-4.

Robert Milkins overcame Zhou Yuelong 5-4, while Jamie Jones saw off Lu Ning 5-2.

Matthew Stevens lost in the first round to Joe Perry, while Ryan Day and Mark King were wildcard winners.
