Matthew Stevens reached the quarter-finals of the UK Championship in York with a 6-4 victory over Marco Fu on Tuesday, while Stephen Maguire was shocked by Stuart Bingham.

Stevens took a 4-2 lead in his tie but Fu levelled matters with a 60 clearance to make it 4-4. The Welshman did eventually end his resistance with a convincing final frame to advance to the last-eight.

Stevens will now play the winner of John Higgins and Mark Davis who play on Wednesday evening.

Ali Carter also made it through to the last eight during the afternoon session, defeating Mark Joyce in comfortable fashion with a final break of 73 to seal a 6-2 win. Joyce beat defending champion Judd Trump in the first round, coming back from 5-2 down to win 6-5, but a second comeback in three days was beyond him.

Carter will now face Bingham, who beat Maguire 6-4 on Tuesday evening. Maguire, the 2004 winner of the competition, was defeated by the better man on the night as Bingham moved 5-4 ahead with a break of 120 before sealing it with a run of 54.

Also during the evening session, Shaun Murphy was a comfortable winner against Graeme Dott, advancing 6-2 against the Scot. Murphy was regularly among the balls, amassing breaks of 70-plus on more than one occasion with a classy 130 the highlight.
