Reigning champion John Higgins crashed out of the Shanghai Masters after being beaten 5-1 by in-form Mark Davis in the last-16.

The four-time champion of the world follows in the footsteps of Judd Trump and Stephen Maguire as the big-name casualties from the tournament, and continues to be outdone by Davis in recent meetings.

Davis, who successfully defended his six-red World Championship crown a fortnight ago, hammered Higgins 6-0 en route to the win, and he also dumped the Scot out of last season's World and UK Championships.

Davis kicked off with a break of 76 and raced into a 3-0 advantage. Higgins managed to get himself back into the contest by taking the fourth frame, but that would prove to be his only telling contribution to the encounter as Davis rattled in a 52 and cleared the colours in the sixth frame to claim victory.
