Trump comfortably through, Carter slams format

Judd Trump sailed into the second round of the UK Championship after collecting a 6-2 victory over Gareth Green.

The player who topped the rankings at the start of last season was 3-1 up at the midsession interval, and was pegged back to 3-2, but Trump, who won the title in 2011, powered to the win.

Three-time UK Championship runner-up Ken Doherty was stunned 6-5 by World No. 99 John Astley, while 1992 UK champion Jimmy White survived a scare as he saw off Michael Wasley 6-4 having been 3-1 in front.

Former champion of the world Graeme Dott came through a 6-2 winner against Fraser Patrick, with last year's semi-finalist Ali Carter beating Ratchayothin Yotharuck 6-1.

Carter, meanwhile, is not happy with the new format, with a first round of 128 players competing at the event not working.

"It's not for me this flat draw. I don't think the venue can accommodate it," Carter told the BBC. "It's hard to believe that if you are in the top 16 you would be in favour of this.

"We all had to come through the old system. We all started off at the bottom and got to the top so I don't see why everyone else has to do that.

Champion of Champions finalist Stuart Bingham whitewashed Ahmed Saif 6-0, while last season's World Championship finalist at the Crucible Barry Hawkins also recorded a 6-0 scoreline against Alexander Ursenbache.
