World No. 6 Marco Fu suffered a shock 6-5 defeat to Sheffield amateur Mitchell Travis at the UK Championship.

Under the revamped format at the Barbican Centre, the top 16 in the rankings have been put into the first-round draw of 128.

Travis pegged Fu back to level the match four times, ensuring a final frame. A fluked snooker proved a pivotal moment with Travis going on to clear the baulk colours for victory.

Travis told worldsnooker.com: "I haven't got words for that yet, it's the biggest win of my life.

"Before the match I knew I had nothing to lose. I came here as a rank outsider and thought as long as I don't make myself look like a muppet, I'll enjoy it.

"I was 2-0 down and went to the toilet and just had a word with myself to just play my natural game and not to put pressure on myself, and luckily I came through.

"The venue was absolutely marvellous and it was a dream come true to play here, I'll never forget it."

Ricky Walden whitewashed China's Cao Xin Long 6-0, while Scotsmen John Higgins and Stephen Maguire secured 6-2 wins over Alex Borg and Sanderson Lam respectively. Mark Davis, a semi-finalist last year, hit breaks of 80, 81 and 75 to beat Finn Robin Hull by the same scoreline.

Matthew Stevens saw off Hartlepool rookie Ryan Clark 6-4, with Luca Brecel winning by the same margin against Mike Dunn. Brecel now faces Maguire in the second round.

Travis will face Norway's Kurt Maflin who beat Liam Highfield 6-4 with breaks of 80, 83 and 72.

Joe Perry beat James Cahill 6-3, while James Wattana, Robbie Williams, Rod Lawler, Tian Pengfei, Scott Donaldson and Daniel Wells all won on Friday.
