Robertson cruises but Davis beaten at World Open

World No.1 Neil Robertson made light work of his first round match at the World Open with a 5-1 win over Jamie Jones, in which he made the 89th century break of his season.

Robertson enjoyed visits of 68, 53, 100 and 84 to advance, while his century moved him 11 short of a hundred three-figure breaks for the season. The Australian had already blitzed the previous record of 61.

"I thought I played well and finished off the match strongly," Robertson told worldsnooker.com. "Jamie was a tough opponent, he's a better player than his ranking suggests.

"It's great to make centuries but the most important thing is to win matches. The last couple of tournaments haven't gone as well as they could so I'm determined to have a good run building up to the World Championship."

Elsewhere, Steve Davis was beaten 5-3 by Stuart Bingham and could now face a fight to keep his tour card with the World Championship qualifiers looming. Bingham made a break of 103 in his victory.

Barry Hawkins edged past Matthew Selt with a 5-4 win, while Graeme Dott enjoyed a 5-2 triumph over Tian Pengfei. Mark Selby made a 52 in his 5-3 win against Anthony Hamilton and Mark Allen opened his 5-2 victory over Mike Dunn with a break of 127. John Higgins also hit a century break of 122 as he beat Alex Davies 5-1 to book his second round spot.

Mark Davis whitewashed Adam Wicheard while Stephen Maguire was shocked 5-4 by Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
