Relentless Trump whitewashes wildcard in one hour

Judd Trump wasted little time in staking his claims for the World Open title as he dispatched wildcard Chen Zifan 5-0 in 61 minutes.

Trump made two breaks of 61 as well as a 64 and 88 in his first round victory but admitted the fact Zifan had not played in front of the television cameras before had aided him.

"Overall I was happy with how I played," Trump told worldsnooker.com. "Chen hasn't play on TV before so it was hard for him.

"Since the New Year I have been playing well. I'd lost in the first round of the last few tournaments in China so I'm just happy to get a win here."

Ken Doherty saw off Barry Pinches 5-2 while Ali Carter was pleased after a 5-3 win against Dave Gilbert.

"I need to do well here to secure my top 16 place for the World Championship so there was a lot riding on it," Carter said. "This is massive because I don't want to have to qualify for the Crucible.

"I've had a tough season with some health problems which have affected my confidence. Physically I am getting stronger now and I'm back in the gym. It's just nice to be playing snooker and giving myself a chance."

Ding Junhui eased through with a 5-1 victory against Li Yan, which included a top break of 128.

"I played ok," Ding said. "Li played some good safety so it was tough for me during the first few frames. I wasn't worried because I'm well prepared. I will try to concentrate and play better in the next round.

"It's good to be close to the sea so I'm able to relax a bit. It's a nice hotel and venue. I feel relaxed. The tournament is making progess every year, it's getting better. I hope the fans can be more supportive and come to the venue to watch snooker - not only my matches because 64 of the world's best players are all here."

Shaun Murphy beat Jimmy White 5-1, including a run of 128, which has severely affected the Whirlwind's hopes of keeping his Tour card.

Elsewhere, Liang Wenbo enjoyed a 5-1 triumph and 111 break against Scott Donaldson. Mark Joyce was victorious against David Gilbert, top scoring with a break of 95 in his win.

Anthony McGill was beaten 5-3 by Marco Fu but top scored with a superb break of 144.
