O'Sullivan took the first frame of the second session with a break of 93, the highest of the day, before Perry won four out of the subsequent six frames to open up a 9-6 lead.

Both players spurned good chances in the final frame of the day before O'Sullivan cleared from yellow to pink to triumph 68-38 and cut Perry's lead going into Saturday morning's session.

Mark Selby became the first player into the quarter-finals after completing a 13-9 win over Ali Carter on Friday evening.

Selby, a finalist in 2007, reached the last eight for the first time in three years and will face the winner of Alan McManus and Ken Doherty, whose second-round tie is tightly poised at 4-3 after the opening session.

Elsewhere, Ricky Walden pulled clear of Barry Hawkins to take advantage of their match and lead 9-6 going into Saturday's final session.
