John Higgins will play no further part in the German Masters following the death of his father from cancer.

The world No. 1, who had beaten Robert Milkins in the first round earlier on Friday, withdrew from the tournament to fly home to Scotland after learning that his John Higgins Snr's health had deteriorated. But just hours after pulling out of the tournament, he discovered that his father had lost his long battle with cancer.

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn said: "On behalf of World Snooker I send deepest sympathies to the Higgins family at this sad time."

Higgins' second-round opponent, Marco Fu, receives a bye to the quarter-finals.

That quarter-final line-up will see Fu match up against Joe Swail, who beat Shaun Murphy 5-2, while Mark Williams lines up against Joe Perry. Stephen Maguire thrashed Ricky Walden 5-0 to set up a last-eight meeting with Graeme Dott, and Mark Selby will meet Ding Junhui after a 5-3 triumph over Stephen Hendry.
