Marler 'proud' and 'nervous' about Quins captaincy

New Harlequins captain Joe Marler has admitted to being "very apprehensive" about the task facing him this season, while adding he is "very proud" at being appointed.

Marler, who takes over from England captain and team-mate Chris Robshaw, told the BBC: "I'm nervous, very apprehensive about it. It might not sink in until it is gone. The more I think about it the more honoured and proud I am.

"I suppose the thing I am most nervous about is making sure I deserve my place. That's the biggest thing. I'll say what is needed to be said and I won't say stuff for the sake of it."

Marler is only 24, although he has already won 22 Test caps, and last led a side at Under-18 level. He also has big shoes to fill with Robshaw standing down to concentrate on his England duties in the build-up to the Rugby World Cup.

"He's led the club to three trophies in the past four or five years and it's been our most successful period, so they are big boots to fill," he said. "With him being the senior guy with England it's a bit daunting, but he is a great guy and character and someone that is always willing to help."
